The busiest return period of Operation Marhaba 2026 is now under way. Particularly heavy traffic is expected from 25 to 29 August, while 30 August is also forecast to be busy.
Passengers travelling from Morocco to Europe must have a fixed booking before approaching the passenger terminal. Anyone holding an open, flexible or undated ticket should contact the ferry company and secure a confirmed sailing first.
Changes remain subject to availability. A confirmed ticket cannot guarantee a journey without waiting, but arriving without one may prevent access to the port and leave a family searching for another crossing during the busiest week of the summer.

THE BUSIEST RETURN DAYS HAVE BEGUN
For thousands of Moroccans living abroad, the summer journey is now reversing direction. Cars are being prepared, families are saying goodbye and travellers are heading north towards the Strait of Gibraltar.
The final week of August is traditionally one of the most demanding periods of the Marhaba return operation. Many families need to reach Europe before work and school schedules resume, concentrating a large number of journeys into a short period.
Tanger Med expects particularly heavy outbound traffic from 25 to 29 August. The current published forecast also classifies 30 August as busy, while 31 August was listed at a more moderate level.
Travellers who have genuine flexibility may wish to avoid the peak dates, but they should not change their plans until another crossing has been confirmed by the ferry company.
Heavy traffic does not mean every passenger will experience the same waiting time. Conditions can differ according to the sailing, arrival time, check-in status, vessel capacity and number of vehicles approaching the terminal.
DO NOT ARRIVE WITH AN OPEN TICKET
This is the most important rule of the Marhaba 2026 return journey.
A fixed or confirmed ferry ticket shows the precise date and time of departure. It assigns the passenger to a specific scheduled crossing.
An open or undated ticket may permit travel within a broader period, but it does not confirm a place on a particular sailing. During the return phase, that is not enough to access Tanger Med.
The port regulates arriving vehicles according to ferry schedules and the capacity of the available vessels. This is intended to prevent more passengers from entering the terminal than ferries can carry and to reduce prolonged congestion.
Before leaving, check the ticket itself. Do not rely only on an earlier email, a provisional reservation or the assumption that a flexible ticket will be accepted.

If the date or time is missing, contact the ferry operator. Do not assume that staff at Tanger Med will immediately find space on another crossing.
HOW TO CONFIRM OR CHANGE YOUR BOOKING
Follow these steps before starting the journey:
Find the ferry company and reservation number on your booking.
Check that a specific departure date and time are clearly displayed.
Open the ferry company’s official website or application. Avoid unofficial links received through social media or unknown accounts.
Use the operator’s verified customer-service channel if the booking remains unclear.
Request any change before driving towards Tanger Med. A request is not a confirmed journey until the company issues an updated booking.
Download the new confirmation to every phone travelling with the family. Keep an offline copy and, if possible, a printed backup.
Check the departure again shortly before leaving. Sailing times and operational information can change.
Tanger Med’s official passenger website provides live departure information and links to ferry-company contacts. The instructions attached to your individual booking should take priority over general travel advice.

WHERE TRAVELLERS CAN ASK FOR HELP
The main currently verified pre-departure support point is the Tanger Méditerranée rest area, officially known in French as the Aire de repos Méditerranée, or ARM.
The facility is managed by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity and is located near the southern entrance to the motorway leading towards Tangier. During the special return arrangement, teams from ferry companies and Tanger Med can process bookings, confirm departure dates and times, handle necessary commercial formalities and check in passengers before they continue to the port.
The arrangement began on 18 August and is scheduled to continue until 6 September 2026.
Official guidance also identifies the Aïn Chouka port area near Ksar Sghir, a few kilometres from the Tanger Med passenger terminal, as a location where travellers may request help with a booking change.
These locations cannot guarantee a place on a different ferry. All changes still depend on the ferry company and remaining capacity. The safest option is to settle the booking before beginning the journey.
The wider Marhaba network has 26 official reception sites in Morocco and Europe. The Mohammed V Foundation provides social assistance and medical care across this network from 10 June to 15 September.

WHAT TO CHECK ON THE DAY OF TRAVEL
Begin with the official Tanger Med Passengers website and its live departures page. Then check the journey directly with the ferry company.
Review road conditions and the weather before leaving. Even when the port remains operational, an individual departure can be delayed, changed or cancelled for operational or weather-related reasons.
Leave enough time for a safe journey, but do not drive to the terminal many hours early unless Tanger Med or the ferry company has instructed you to do so. Vehicles arriving far outside their departure window can place additional pressure on the regulated area.
The correct arrival time is the one communicated by the port or ferry operator.
At Tanger Med, follow the instructions of port personnel, police, customs officers and border-control teams. Keep passports and the confirmed booking accessible rather than packed underneath the luggage.
WHY THE RETURN JOURNEY IS SO LARGE
By 3 August 2026, 2,741,570 Moroccans living abroad had entered Morocco since the launch of Operation Marhaba.
Of that total, 1,430,811 people, or 52.19%, arrived by sea. Tanger Med received 512,693 arriving maritime passengers, giving it the largest share handled by any individual Moroccan port.
Morocco had also recorded 287,518 arriving vehicles by 3 August. On 2 August alone, Tanger Med received 31,917 passengers and 8,612 vehicles.
These are summer arrival figures, not current departure numbers. They do not reveal how long a traveller will wait today.
They do, however, show the scale of the movement that must now reverse. A large share of those families will return to Europe within several weeks, placing exceptional pressure on northern roads, ferry services and passenger terminals.
That is why planning matters. Every confirmed reservation helps the port match passengers and vehicles with the ferries available to carry them.
ONE CHECK BEFORE THE ROAD NORTH
The return journey after a summer with family can be long and tiring. No ticket can eliminate every delay, but a few minutes of checking can prevent hours of avoidable stress.
Before loading the car and beginning the road north, make sure every traveller has the correct documents.
Then look at the ferry ticket one final time.
It needs a confirmed departure date and time.
If either is missing, do not drive to Tanger Med yet.
