AUTO ENGINE: How Morocco’s Car Industry Is Powering The Kingdom’s Economy

Forget the idea that Morocco’s economy is only about tourism, agriculture and phosphates. One of the country’s biggest money stories now has wheels — cars, parts, factories and exports. With automotive exports rising to 58.2 billion dirhams in the first four months of 2026, the sector has become one of the clearest signs of how Morocco is changing from a low-cost production location into a serious industrial platform.

Morocco’s automotive exports grew 18.6% to 58.2 billion dirhams between January and April 2026, making the car industry the country’s leading export contributor during that period. In 2024, the country’s automotive exports reached a record 157 billion dirhams. Exports bring money into the country, support factories, ports, transport firms, engineering services and thousands of jobs.

Renault And Stellantis Give Morocco Global Weight

Two names are central to the story: Renault and Stellantis. Both have major operations in Morocco, helping turn the country into one of Africa’s most important automotive production bases. Stellantis planned to more than double the annual production capacity of its Kenitra plant to 535,000 vehicles, linked to a €1.2 billion investment including electric supermini models such as the Citroën Ami, Opel Rocks-e and Fiat Topolino. These companies do not only bring factories — they bring supply chains, standards, training and global links.

Tanger Med Is The Export Door

Factories need a powerful exit route. Tanger Med has become one of the country’s most important industrial and logistics assets, connecting Moroccan production to European and global markets. Morocco also aims to lift the local sourcing rate in its automotive sector to 75% by 2030, up from around 69% — the more value Morocco captures locally, the stronger the industry becomes.

The EV Shift Could Change The Game

The next chapter is electric. The country has attracted investment linked to EV batteries and electric mobility, including a major planned Gotion High Tech battery project in Kenitra starting with 20 GWh of capacity and potentially reaching 100 GWh. Morocco’s trade deficit widened 18.4% in the first four months of 2026, making strong export sectors even more important. But the picture is not only about challenges — automotive exports, tourism revenue rising 21.2% to 44.3 billion dirhams and remittances growing 9.8% to 4 billion dirhams all give Morocco tools to navigate global pressure. Morocco is no longer just watching the global car industry move — it is part of the engine.
