Spain has long been the default cheap-sun escape for British holidaymakers. But this summer, one Moroccan beach city is beating many European favourites on price — with package deals falling as low as £129 per person.
For decades, the formula for a cheap summer holiday from Britain was simple.
Book Spain.
Maybe Portugal.
Perhaps Turkey if you were willing to fly a little farther.
But in 2026, another destination has forced its way into that conversation.
Agadir.
The Moroccan Atlantic resort is emerging as one of the strongest-value beach destinations of the summer, combining long stretches of sand, warm weather and comparatively low prices on hotels, meals and package holidays.
And some of the deals are striking.
AGADIR IS UNDERCUTTING EUROPE
The Sun recently highlighted Agadir among the destinations where holidaymakers can make their money stretch furthest this summer.
One current package cited by the newspaper offered five nights in Agadir from £129 per person, including return flights from London Stansted.
That is the sort of price more commonly associated with a short city break than a flight-and-hotel beach holiday.
Earlier research from loveholidays had already placed Agadir at the top of its ranking of the most affordable summer holiday destinations for 2026.
The company analysed package holidays between June and August and found an average seven-night price of around £230 per person.
Some deals worked out at roughly the price of a restaurant dinner per person, per night.
WHY AGADIR?
Price alone would not matter if there were nothing to do once you arrived.
Agadir’s advantage is that it offers the basic ingredients European tourists already travel thousands of kilometres for.
There is a broad Atlantic beach stretching for miles.
There are large resort hotels and apartment complexes.
There is a modern marina.
And there is sunshine for much of the year.
The city also sits within reach of surf towns such as Taghazout, while the Anti-Atlas landscape gives visitors a completely different backdrop from the Mediterranean resorts of Spain or Portugal.
For travellers flying from Britain, the journey is still relatively manageable at under four hours on many direct routes.
THE £129 DEAL IS NOT THE WHOLE STORY
Cheap headline prices always need context.
The lowest packages are usually tied to specific departure airports, dates and accommodation.
The £129 deal cited by The Sun, for example, was for a five-night room-only stay at Appart Hotel Igoudar with flights from London Stansted in late September.
That does not mean every traveller can book Agadir for £129.
But the wider trend remains significant.
Other recent offers have placed summer stays in Agadir at below £200 per person, while competing European beach destinations can cost considerably more during peak periods.
The Mirror has also highlighted Agadir as a leading cheap-holiday destination for 2026.
FOOD CAN BE PART OF THE SAVING
The savings do not necessarily stop at the hotel.
The Sun cited meals in Agadir from around £3.99, helping explain why the destination can appeal to travellers looking beyond the package price alone.
That matters.
A cheap flight followed by expensive meals, taxis and drinks can quickly turn a bargain holiday into something very different.
Morocco generally gives travellers access to a much broader range of price points.
You can eat cheaply in local cafés and restaurants.
Or you can spend significantly more at beach clubs, luxury resorts and high-end restaurants.
Agadir works because both versions of the holiday can exist in the same destination.
IT IS NOT TRYING TO BE IBIZA
That may also be part of the appeal.
Agadir does not need to compete directly with Ibiza, Mykonos or Marbella on nightlife and celebrity beach clubs.
- Its strongest proposition is simpler.
- Sun.
- Beach.
- Hotels.
- Food.
- And value.
For families or couples who care more about spending a week somewhere warm than being seen at a particular club, that difference can matter.
Especially when holiday budgets are under pressure.
MOROCCO IS GETTING EASIER TO REACH
Agadir’s rise is also being helped by airline capacity.
Low-cost carriers and tour operators have continued expanding links between Britain and Morocco, making the country increasingly accessible as a short-haul leisure destination.
That puts Agadir in direct competition with southern Spain, the Canary Islands, Portugal, Turkey and Greece.
It is a very different position from the Morocco tourism market of a generation ago.
Travellers no longer have to treat the country as an adventurous long-haul-style trip.
For many Europeans, Morocco is becoming a normal weekend or one-week flight away.
THE REAL COMPETITION IS VALUE
Spain will not suddenly stop being Europe’s favourite mass-market holiday destination.
Its tourism infrastructure is enormous, flights are plentiful and British travellers know its resorts extremely well.
But Agadir does not need to replace Spain to win.
It only has to convince enough travellers to ask one question before booking:
What am I actually getting for my money?
And in summer 2026, that calculation is becoming increasingly interesting.
- A Moroccan beach.
- Atlantic sunshine.
- Hotels close to the sea.
Meals that can still cost only a few pounds.
And package holidays occasionally appearing for less than many travellers spend on a weekend at home.
For people priced out of Europe’s most famous summer resorts, Agadir is starting to look less like the alternative.
It is starting to look like the bargain.
